2 FINANCE AND ECONOMICS
BOOKS TO BUY

Here are two best sellers we think every business owner should read. Call us biased, but our top pick is Other People’s Money by John Kay. In it he gives us a fresh look at the role of finance in a modern economy and its tilt towards increased risk. If you’re looking to explore the problems created by a debt-driven economy, we suggest Between Debt and the Devil by Adair Turner.

A STRONG DOLLAR HURTS CHINA
MORE THAN THE U.S.

We all know that a strong American dollar results in decreased American exports and slows our US economy, but did you know that its impact on China’s economy is nearly double that of the US?

According to Bloomberg Business - they are almost twice as dependent on trade as the US. And since the Asian nation’s currency is tied to the dollar in order to enhance its financial stability, as the dollar advances against most currencies across the world, it effects the yuan (their dollar) even more.

So we see that a rapid 10 percent rise in the dollar slows Chinese economic growth by nearly one percentage point; about double the impact on the U.S. That’s food for thought the next time you pick up something that’s “Made in China” at your discount store.

We agreed with you! However, the bureaucrats making the decision had a different opinion. The Treasury Department ultimately selected Harriet Tubman to be the first woman pictured on US currency. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in 2020, she will replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. Consideration had also been given to placing Tubman on the $10 bill, which would have given Alexander Hamilton the boot. Considering Hamilton was the country’s very first Treasury secretary, and the father of our modern banking system, we are glad that did not occur!
